Air Show Photography with your D40!

Well I went to my first air show (fleet week) in San Francisco a couple of weekends ago and didn't have the best of luck getting great pictures. Out of 200 shots this was probably my best and it's not that great. My first and foremost problem was i didn't study! "How to Photograph an Air Show" I just figured I'd use shutter priority and set it at 1/1000 which actually worked fine for a few shots but not all. So the next day i got online and googled "How to Photograph an Air Show" and saw that indeed i did miss a few things that would have helped.

Here are a few links to help you out before you go and shot an air show.

New Nikon D90 Monster!

Nikon just anounced the new D90 and boy does it look sweeeet! I love my D40 but after a year of learning on this great camera it might be time to step up to this new D90.

From DPreview.com: After a steady trickle of leaks and rumors Nikon has announced the successor to its popular D80 middleweight digital SLR in the shape of the D90. The D90 looks very similar, but underneath it's a completely new camera that's inherited advanced features from further up the line and user-friendly features from the D40/D60 range. Oh, and it's the world's first digital SLR with a movie mode. Oher features of note include a new 12.3 MP CMOS sensor, the D3/D300/D700's fab high resolution 3.0-inch screen and continuous shooting at up to 4.5 frames per second.

Nikon 18-200mm DX VR For your D40 & D40x

I have personally heard nothing but great things about this lens but still have not had the funds to get one.

One of the blessings of an SLR can also be a curse: having to choose which lenses to carry, which means finding the right balance between weight and bulk, and having the focal lengths you need.

The Nikon AF-S DX VR 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 G IF ED lens offers Nikon shooters a satisfying single-lens solution. It is compatible with all Nikon DX digital SLRs including the D300, D60, and D40.

New Nikon D40 & D40x For Dummies Book - Kindle!

For Dummies and author/instructor Julie Adair King teamed up to create four books unlike any other on the market. While other DSLR books target experienced photographers and pros, these four For Dummies books target first-time and novice users who are interested in their new technology but might be intimidated by all the features.

"In a recent class I taught, none of the students with DSLRs understood even basic concepts such as aperture and shutter speed," Author Julie King reports. These books explain all the features of the latest entry level DSLR cameras, as well as how handle common tasks like getting images onto a PC and printing.
The Full-Color For Dummies books are being released from March 2008-September 2008 and cover the Nikon D40/D40x, the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi/400D, the Nikon D60, and the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi/450D respectively.

The assumption is that the reader has little to no knowledge of general photography terms or techniques. The goal of each book is to familiarize the reader with the controls and features of their camera so they can apply them to any shooting situation. Chapters cover:

Shooting in auto-mode

Adjusting image quality and size

Reviewing images

Controlling exposure

Using focus features

Managing color

invisibleSHIELD™ for the Nikon D40

Your search for a(n) Nikon D40 case, skin, or cover is now over. As its name describes, the invisibleSHIELD™ is a tough, clear film that will shield your D40 protecting it from unsightly scratches. Not only will it protect your device, the invisibleSHIELD™ itself does not scratch so your device will always look like it did the day you bought it.

The invisibleSHIELD™ has its origins in the military where it was designed to protect the leading edges of helicopter blades from getting scratched by rocks and debris. If it can protect helicopter blades spinning at hundreds of miles per hour, imagine what the invisibleSHIELD™ can do to protect your D40!

The invisibleSHIELD™ is only .2 milimeters thick making it the slimmest D40 skin or D40 cover of its kind. It is so tough, we back it with a lifetime guarantee. So, if it ever does wear or scratch, we will replace it for free, for life.

If you're still not convinced, please watch this video demo and see for yourself how strong the invisiblSHIELD™ really is.

Photophlow is a fun way to share flickr photos in real time. invite your friends, search together, chat and comment all at once.

'A comfy coffee lounge'"It really changes the way I use Flickr," said Alex Almeida, who publishes the Phat Photographer blog, who described Photophlow with a different metaphor. With its instant interaction, "it really is like a comfy coffee lounge with a big shoe box of photos where people can chat comfortably and pull any of those photos out of the shoebox and discuss them."

Understanding Histograms on your Nikon D40 & D40x

Possibly the most useful tool available in digital photography is the histogram. It could also well be the least understood. In this article we will look at what a camera histogram tells the photographer and how best to utilize that information.

Virtually every digital camera, from the simplest point-and-shoot to the most sophisticated digital SLR has the ability to display a histogram directly, or more usually superimposed upon the image just taken. (The Hasselblad H1, the latest generation of film & digital capable cameras, can display a histogram on the camera grip’s LCD while the image is separately displayed on the digital back’s LCD.) On most cameras though the histogram display takes place on the rear LCD screen, and most cameras can be programmed to do this both on the image that is displayed immediately after a shot is taken, or later when frames are being reviewed.

Nikon D40 & D40x Circular Polarizer Filter

With my 2 lenses i got with my D40, the 18-55mm & 55-200mm VR both take the same size filters 52mm so that's nice. Next I'll probably get a Neutral Density filter. Do you need to clean your sensor yet? I just noticed a dust spot on my sensor and needed to get rid of it but wasn't sure exactly how to do it till i found this cool video. This guy is cleaning a Nikon D70 sensor but it the same as our D40 and D40x. After watching this video i had no problem getting rid of that dust spot. Thank God!

Nikon School Presents: Fast, Fun & Easy Great Digital Pictures Instructional DVD & Understanding Digital Photography Instructional DVD - for Nikon D40 & D40x Digital SLR Cameras.

I got the Fast, Fun & Easy DVD in my Christmas stocking from Santa this year and it's a pretty good DVD. But i would suggest getting the Understanding Digital Photography DVD instead since it's more in depth.

D40/x Practice - Virtual Camera By Craig Hickman

From Craig Hickman

"I'm testing a new Flash movie designed to teach exposure concepts as they relate to digital cameras. Anyone can use it but it was originally designed for my students at the University of Oregon in the Digital Arts, Digital Imaging class. It still has a few rough edges and bugs, but you can try it out"

This is very cool to play with!

Nikon D40 / D40x Laminated Field Reference Card

Blue Crane Digital - Visual tools for a digital age!

Your camera manual covers all the functions on your new digital camera. It’s also over one hundred pages long.

When you are in the field, you need quick and accurate answers to achieve the best shot. We developed the inBrief line of camera guides so you can get the answers, and more importantly, the shot you want.

Each card is divided into eight color-coded panels. If you have a question about metering or bracketing, simply look at the yellow panel. Questions about custom functions are answered on the green panel. The layout and description for the control panel and view finder can be found on the blue panel. And a color-coded index on the front page immediately points you toward the answer you need.

This looks pretty cool, I just ordered one from Amazon for $10 dollars. This will fit in my camera bag better then the user manual for sure.

Promaster Tripods for your D40/x

Eventually your going to want a tripod for your new D40/x DSLR. I see there are many to choose from and range in price from cheap (my kind) to expensive professional ones. For me I got the Promaster 6100 tripod and it's just perfect. I got it at my local shutterbug for $49 dollars.
