New Nikon D90 Monster!

Nikon just anounced the new D90 and boy does it look sweeeet! I love my D40 but after a year of learning on this great camera it might be time to step up to this new D90.

From DPreview.com: After a steady trickle of leaks and rumors Nikon has announced the successor to its popular D80 middleweight digital SLR in the shape of the D90. The D90 looks very similar, but underneath it's a completely new camera that's inherited advanced features from further up the line and user-friendly features from the D40/D60 range. Oh, and it's the world's first digital SLR with a movie mode. Oher features of note include a new 12.3 MP CMOS sensor, the D3/D300/D700's fab high resolution 3.0-inch screen and continuous shooting at up to 4.5 frames per second.

It's all too easy to be seduced by a new camera and it's marketing as soon as it comes out. I also own a D40, and the simple physics are undeniable. Because our little D40 has only 6MP, those pixels are twice the size as those on the D90 and thus take in more light, period. In-camera processing to reduce noise merely smears details. The D40 even has less per-pixel noise than the D300! It has almost the same pixel density as the full-frame D3! The D90 only has 4.5 frames per second, not a big step up from the 2.9 of the D40, and the flash sync speed of the D90 is only 1/200, compared to 1/500 of the D40. Also, the D40 can capture unlimited jpegs in continuous mode, whereas the D90 can only muster 18!! What more do you think the D90 is going to teach you?! I don't care about movies.

Yes you make all good points, and i agree with everything you said. My reasons for the upgrade is 1. to have bracketing for HDR 2. 11 point focus 3. movies 4. more lens chooses and 5. the ability to use my SB-600 off camera just to point out a few reasons. Plus your right I'm totally being seduced. I love my d40 and have learned a lot from using it so when i upgrade it goes to my wife she has gotten pretty good with it also. Thanks for posting!

Sir, all valid reasons for an upgrade. But I can take several exposures myself (rather than using the bracket function) when I want to use HDR (I have Photoshop CS3 which merges the image to HDR automatically. Most people who have the D80 don't even use the bracket function. Most professionals use the central focus point when composing their images, although I grant you the D90 is probably faster at tracking; lens compatibiltiy is a definite issue, but I personally find that the lenses that I'm forced to manual focus with are better off focused manually anyway (eg macro); movies only last up to 5 mins on the D90 before the sensor overheats (according to Nikon), and you have to manually focus the lens; by all means get the D90, it is not for anyone to tell you not to. But my overall point is you should make an informed choice. I have made perfect 22x32 prints from my D40, so I also don't care about megapixels; you make the photograph, not your camera. When I decide to upgrade, it will be to a full-frame camera - the only significant upgrade in image quality. But they have yet to make the same selection of lenses as they do for DX cameras like the D40/D90. Whatever you do, I wish you happy shooting!!

...and the D40 can mount those great old (and cheap) Non-Ai Nikkors!
